| Let's be honest. We're just like everybody
else when it comes to surfin' the web. When we go to
other design firm websites, we don't go to read the
mission statement or to peruse the client list. All
mission statements say the same thing anyway, right?
"We want to provide the highest level of design
possible for our clients" and "we won't sleep
until you have the best marketing brochure ever" or
something like that. We as web surfers go to design firm websites for 3 reasons: 1) We're interested in hiring a firm to do a particular project, and we want to check out their work. 2) We already hired this agency to do a project, and we need the address, phone number or something. 3) We want to see the latest and most advanced websites. Design firms should have the best sites because they want to show everyone that comes through the site what they have the ability to do. What we want our visitors to see is that we are a straight forward design firm interested in doing creative work of any kind for whomever needs such a service. We don't need to water down the site with useless information that is only there to impress the pants off you to the point you can't take anymore, and you hire the agency for the sheer fact that they did a flyer for Levis once. We feel our website should act in part as a portfolio piece of its own. If we try to sell creative website design, but our own site lacks any creativity whatsoever, we have in essence lied to you, the client. Be wary of design firms that take no interest in their own stuff, because if they can't be creative in the collateral they create to market themselves, how can they be remotely interested in marketing you? It's like going to a bald barber, or a mechanic that drives a Pacer. Still, there are those that feel that a mission statement is a vital part of any marketing plan. Potential clients need to know if we are capable of providing the proper level of assistance, and to those we offer this single, simple diatribe: "Check out the portfolio, and decide for yourself if you want us to bid on your next creative design job". |
